As human beings, or homo sapiens, it's in our genome to apply meaning to things which generally don't have meaning, because this is conducive to a cohesive society. The power of morale to enable solidarity, and survival.

As I've been working on this story, I often thought about long-term survival for our species, and what that means. Is there a meaning? In the cosmic sense, there's no reason to do any of what the Discovery crew are doing. Our metabolism carries on automatically.

Because of this, I think they are just celebrating being alive, and wondering how to preserve that in the future. At least, until something different comes along.

were they doing things to prove themself to others? n the short run and not benifit others in the long run with discoveries? and then thinking what good is it in the longest run?

in 7 million years nobody is going to rerember any of us, life might march on on another planet full of microbes. in the longist run everything is pointless and everything fades away to eventual nothing. even if something is made important for the time being. it is still pointless

I am trying to think of all the messages in the story, but this comic I guess is not a simple "theme"

Thank you for the answer!

Hi Mutt,

What's prominent on everyone's mind, is that time is running out. Discovery had one chance to make it to the sun in optimal condition, and it lost that chance—by its own hand, no less.

Yuri feels that, regardless, this isn't the end. They can't quit, because quitting has no meaning now. Quitting can't afford them any security. However, Discovery's resurrection this time remains uncertain.

I understand their reasoning and all, but... is Yuri implying that they literally can't go back to Earth? Even for a pit stop?
