Hi,

I think that he's looking at the leaves that they're using for the collars. So, he's thinking of the strangulation aspect of them. Because of that, he's thinking to starve Fig (that sexual entity) in the Winter, when she's more powerful.

If this is the point in the story that I think it is, then he can trust in Fig to finally get rid of the HIOT student, by proving his thesis wrong.

Zack, what is XY seeing here? I’m still confused on what he sees with ghe leaves. Is it that since its close to winter he knows its gonna drive Fig nuts?
33 . by: Botany September 13, 2017, 6:59 pm

Yes. He is a ghoul. Whatever personhood he has, he is still less of a person now, and a product all the more.
32 . by: September 13, 2017, 2:47 am

Botany, I agree that its horribly sad that Greenie has been treated so badly in his past and that its caused him to become so corrupted, hurting himself and everyone around him. And I do hope he can go on to realise this and create a better life for himself.

What people are making fun of here is that we've had comments in the past saying that Greenie is a good guy! He's actually doing what's right by tormenting his employees! He's the true hero of our story!

We can feel sorry for his tragic past and hope that he comes around and improves himself, but we can still think he's a dirtbag right now.

It's blind to defend his actions and I would never be so blinded by the vitriol directed at him to do so.

Everyone has to potential to realize the error in their ways and my pity towards Greenie is because of how tragic it is that he's so, so short sighted by his chance to go from powerless to powerful. That he's enacting revenge on the trauma that was dealt to him as a sex worker. It's tragic because of how much suffering will occur on his behalf and how much more will, when what he was put through could never be made right by what he's doing, the same as whatever probably, ugly demise happens to him could never resolve what he did in turn. Everyone deserves to reconcile what others have wrought upon them, Greenie is no different, but there's a pure and good way to find peace and this isn't how you do it, you do not do unto others, you cannot afford wickedness safe harbor in you, by enacting the same violence that's been done to you. That's why I care as much about him as a person as I do about him being stopped. It is conceit and folly to me to wish painful circumstance on others when it was that very same thing that brought them to perpetuate that hubris of Eyes for Eyes.

Villifying someone all you want to excuse what comes to happens to them as right, it does not change the fact that they're still a person. And it does not change how tragic it is for themselves and everyone around them that they could not overcome their ruin.

Breaking an already broke person does not end a cycle of violence. It only continues it.
30 . by: August 31, 2017, 7:46 pm

but but but he's a true hero u guys /sarcasm
29 . by: August 31, 2017, 7:18 pm

#28 yep, that's a mentality I've seen before, a character who's a total dirtbag that people for some inexplicable reason have to rationalize and defend from all criticism. Like Jack Shephard from "Lost", or Shane from "The Walking Dead".
28 . by: August 31, 2017, 6:08 pm

Green could outright say he killed a man in cold blood and people would still defend him
27 . by: Seven August 31, 2017, 5:45 pm

@Dani don't feel bad, I'm still trying to figure out what's going on in the last panel of Secretary page 118.
26 . by: Kai August 31, 2017, 4:41 pm

It's not crazy to theorize. It's pretty sound to think that Green knows all too well how Fig gets when she's sex starved, and is purposely letting Smooth visit in hopes that she'll attack him.
25 . by: Dani August 31, 2017, 2:25 pm

@23 - lol, oh dear! Greenie's gaze is to the left, looking behind his head/ear there. The really thin line is his mouth.

I can't even laugh though, because there was a page like 5 pages ago that I had to ask what I was seeing as well.
24 . by: August 31, 2017, 12:26 pm

23 That's Greenie's face, if that's what you're talking about?
23 . by: August 31, 2017, 11:32 am

What's the purple thing in panel two? I infer a package of fig leaves?
22 . by: August 31, 2017, 9:35 am

It's "crazy" because we lowly peasants apparently don't see the obvious paragon of virtue that is Greenie's True Nature.
21 . by: August 31, 2017, 3:27 am

How is this crazy? Last time there was a panel with Greenie and everyone going "uh oh" in the comments, he sent Sherry to beat up Fig. It'd be crazy for us *not* to put 2 and 2 together here.
20 . by: hemlock August 30, 2017, 10:32 pm

you know, waving the white flag, and letting the guy have his way with extreme positions like "maybe don't abuse the women who work here" and "maybe give them some time off."
19 . by: Juna August 30, 2017, 9:37 pm

@17 The sequence of panels where he looks at the strangler leaf and has a flash of insight (blue+red in the eyes), followed by a shot of those menacing fig branches, seems to suggest otherwise. Fig branches and roots have been a consistent motif for exerting control, and otherwise being spooky looking. I'd be hard pressed not to think he's got his own plans brewing.
18 . by: 9times August 30, 2017, 7:43 pm

Every time a page like this comes up I check the comments, but they just gets crazier and crazier each time.
17 . by: August 30, 2017, 7:39 pm

How do you know that he's not just tired of arguing and waving the white flag to let VD have his way
16 . by: August 30, 2017, 7:29 am

@kuu That's the idea. He wants to make her go nuts and bite the guy.
15 . by: kuu August 30, 2017, 6:23 am

but won't being sex starved also make her bitey?
14 . by: Downhill August 30, 2017, 2:58 am

This is the second time Greenie's tanked his own profit for a petty grudge, the first time being when he threw out Cherry despite Acai paying money for her to be there. He's seriously going to lose weeks worth of clients just to get at Smoothie, one of their regulars.

I hope his lust for absolute control over his employees is what brings him down in the end.
13 . by: Dani August 30, 2017, 1:03 am

Clever Furrama! I think you're right about Greenie's hidden motives. We're also ~200 pages in...are we entering the third and final act of Syconium I wonder?!
12 . by: August 29, 2017, 11:00 pm

Maybe having the art outlet with Smoothie will just completely thwart Greenie's scheme here, and he'll have to take more drastic measures later..
11 . by: August 29, 2017, 9:34 pm

I actually think he might have some direct contribution to the creation of Fig. He was adamant about the "accident" not being XXs fault and has referred to her before, "control that thing inside you".
10 . by: August 29, 2017, 7:45 pm

Also, it's extremely telling that Greenie refers to Fig as HIS masterpiece. That really spells it out that he's stolen all her agency and felt as if he was molding her into something he could profit from, just as when he very first took over and began managing all her business and taking away her freedom to choose and dictate her own schedule/life.

She thought she was creating herself as her own masterpiece, and Greenie has taken that over into his control and has now claimed it as his own. I hope we really do see Fig come into her own by the end of the story, she's had so much taken from her.
9 . by: August 29, 2017, 7:34 pm

What's she going to do with her time, I wonder? Perhaps go back to art as an outlet? I remember the doctor at the beginning mentioning sex as an outlet for frustration (and she wasn't getting sex at the time with Greenie) and suggested art as an outlet. Being sex starved AND not working on art can't be a good combo, but the saving grace here may be that Smoothie has asked her to teach him how to draw. She'll be getting back into art, and perhaps starving 'Fig' and giving 'XX' an edge through teaching Smoothie art may be what gives XX the push she needs.

Or she could just get frustrated and maim him. Let's hope that's not the case.
8 . by: hazard August 29, 2017, 6:54 pm

definitely makes sense that Greenie would sex starve her so she's super horny so she eventually nails Smoothie (both in the sexual & violent way) thus pushing him away.

THE FINAL CHALLENGE?
7 . by: August 29, 2017, 6:23 pm

OH
6 . by: Downhill August 29, 2017, 6:10 pm

Oh shit, yeah, she went *way* too far last time it was winter and she hadn't had a stoat in a while. He's hoping she'll do it again with Smoothie. Just when they were launching plans to combat Fig, too... this is gonna make things very, very difficult.
5 . by: August 29, 2017, 5:57 pm

He's starving her?

Also, it bothers me a lot that he's blaming Smooth as if he's a bad influence on XX. That guy may not be perfect, but he's at least trying to help her, meanwhile Green is trying to put on more and more shackles..
4 . by: Furrama August 29, 2017, 5:24 pm

He's starving her. But (S)XY is still allowed to visit? Understand?

Remember last winter? Page 100 and 101.
3 . by: hemlock August 29, 2017, 5:19 pm

I dunno about worried; it sounds like a kind of advertising based on her usual appeal; spread some rumors about new things she's doing, or about her in general, drive up the mystery, bring in more business, but yeah possibly to combat the 'bad business' her current behavior may be 'causing'.

Can't say I know what sleazy epiphany he's reached though.
2 . by: Furrama August 29, 2017, 5:02 pm

OH BATS AND BELLS I KNOW WHAT HE'S UP TO.

BAD GREEN MAN. NO.
1 . by: Furrama August 29, 2017, 5:00 pm

So, the customers are gossiping about her being out of it? Like, a chunk of the Johns are worried about her? I guess they're blaming it on this place, yes?

I feel like, I need a bit more context.
