Seeing XX's thoughts here makes me rethink what the gray 'flares' backdropping the first panel mean. They look more like tuftsof fur now. It's almost like, in the moments where XX mentally grays out in conversation or while painting, she's trying to being her thoughts back into definition, into the same level of clarity as her body. I think, that's one aspect of Fig she's always held on to, and why she hasn't written off the significance of that persona as a relinquishment to estrus. She sought to achieve that level of immediate, unmediated expression through her non-representational paintings, forming a sort of proxy body for her will to shape in. I suppose that's one way to explain why almost all her grayed out paintings took cues from the people around her: she made portraits out of their abstract selves and their struggle to maintain that self. |

XX I'm so proud of you! Despite all the 'helpless slave to sex' talk she's still fully acknowledging that she made a conscious choice to embrace and build upon her sexuality, and even defends it as artistic!! Yeah!! Very interesting how she doesn't respond to her scent code, but instead to her brothel name. Also interesting that Polarizing from 10%+ makes basically the opposite assertion from Smoothie here - that the mind is an aftereffect of the body, not the other way around. I really love the way her hands are drawn in that one panel. |
