Dear Kali,

Thank you very much for your accurate and pensive drawing of the HIOT student.

I think that you draw stoats just fine Kali. :)

well if he gets traped then there goes back to some parasitic themes. right?
24 . by: July 30, 2017, 9:43 am

That could actually be pretty entertaining, if his halo brain or something gets trapped inside and ends up having to play superego or something similar.

@22

For the same reason everyone complained about Smoothie being a golden boy! He's been set up as simply too knowledgeable and well-intentioned to not get away with it in the Labyrinth, and his time is likely coming. There's been a lot of foreshadowing, symbology included.
22 . by: July 30, 2017, 7:56 am

Why do I get the feeling he's gonna get trapped here.
21 . by: Furrama July 29, 2017, 7:46 pm

@Finity Fertilization!

They're making an Art baby. XD
20 . by: July 29, 2017, 5:08 pm

So, you have the flowerless girl, and the boy with a biggole honkin cactus flower that should only bloom once.
On another note, has anybody noticed that "flowerless girl" is almost a euphemism? Because when you deflower somebody, you're taking their virginity.
19 . by: July 29, 2017, 5:06 pm

lmao god damn it, I have a night blooming cereus in a hanging planter on my porch. I forgot some night blooming cacti have pink blooms, so I completely dismissed the possibility of smoothie having one.
Anyway, the flowers of night blooming cacti only open up for one night of the year. They bloom at night, and the flower is withered before midday the next day.
They're also epiphytes, which is interesting given the hemiepiphyte nature of strangler figs.

I don't know how I didn't consciously catch the phallic symbolism in XY's big ol' flower until you mentioned it here, Furrama, LOL... Fig even says "That flower is huge. Are you trying to tell me something?" It's really reminiscent to me of a spermatozoon on it's way to the ovum here...Fig's flower on the inside. I wonder what'll come of their meeting, and how it'll bode for XY here.

I like the poetics behind it being Oxypetallum, but I kind of hope it turns out to be Epiphyllum hookeri.

Hehehe.

It could be that his time is short. But I think if it does bloom it would symbolize a revelation. Or him personally opening up to her? (He hasn't yet.)

And I think Scruffy foreshadowed that it will bloom in their first appearance. Feels like it would be under climactic circumstances. (giggity)

@Furrama

They are! But Wolf's Rain uses one of their vernacular names, Brahma Kamalam.

Oxypetalum has a couple other names it is known by. One of which could imply that our dear S(XY)'s role is to be fleeting.
14 . by: Furrama July 28, 2017, 9:33 pm

Isn't that... the Wolf's Rain lunar flower?
13 . by: July 28, 2017, 9:08 pm

Epiphyllum Oxypetalum matches it pretty closely.
12 . by: Furrama July 28, 2017, 7:58 pm

A nightblooming cactus of some kind. A pink Epiphyllum is my guess.
11 . by: July 28, 2017, 7:46 pm

What kind of flower does XY wear?
10 . by: Furrama July 28, 2017, 7:01 pm

The word y'all are looking for is yonic. XX's labyrinth is yonic. XY's flower is phallic.

So what we're watching is....

:D

I was wondering why Zach had extra panels showing him deliberately putting it back on before the procedure a few pages back.
9 . by: hazard July 28, 2017, 6:13 pm

it's very clearly a vagina tunnel (as well as the synconium of the fig which has been a vaginal symbol the whole time). That also leads me to believe XX is leading him to the fetus (you gotta get through that birth canal to get to the womb).

Well... Fig has demonstrated that she is a really brilliant conventional artist who could sell landscape paintings and portraits if she wanted to, but she hates doing it. So she took up sex work so she wouldn't have to compromise her preferred art style, abstraction, and still make a living. She refused to get mud on her coat, so to speak.
7 . by: July 28, 2017, 3:29 pm

My guess is he's being led to figs cocoon from her last dream, considering the temperature is continually increasing, and the walls have the appearance of a vagina... at least that's what it looks like to me.
6 . by: Furrama July 28, 2017, 2:07 pm

Well, I mean, I guess this whole thing is about selling out artistically? But in a creative way.
5 . by: Furrama July 28, 2017, 2:04 pm

"Even if your thesis was non-representation, you can't be non-representational yourself."

I do admire that he can tell who she is, even when non representative. The other version of her is representative, but it's not a true version. A pretty fake.

I see a lobed leaf up in the corner of the last panel. I think it's a regular fig.
3 . by: Corvidophile July 28, 2017, 9:12 am

This whole regular fig vs Other, strangler Fig has been odd for me to wrap my head around- I'm from Florida and I'm so used to just calling the strangler fig by its genus name ficus, and they're EVERYWHERE, some grown as trees, some as hedges, and some looking like ancient banyan trees, but I've never identified a "regular" fig in the wild. I used to pluck leaves off and play with the latex sap. It numbed your lips if you licked it. It tasted cloying but bitter.

Uh-oh, strangler fig fruit alert.
