The reason society is organized the way it is, is because they fear The Animal. Oh... They are so conservative because they'd AFRAID. I guess sub-consciously. Even if it seems counter-productive, like shutting out Artistic progress because the person who invented it worked in a brothel. They're afraid... That's very realistic actually, when thinking about real life conservatism. Real life conservatives are afraid of change and The Other. They'll build a wall to keep out immigrants despite it hurting the economy, etc.

I don't feel like this really got addressed, in the end. Credit reform ended up so toothless. Parity with the Animal wasn't really addressed I dont think. But maybe it will be more satisfying at the end of this reread.

Uh-oh. Looks like Fig/Estrus has her teeth set on her next victim..

Right. She is the animal - instinct, the body, the husk. The young brown XX is the creative - the will, the mind, and hope.

Both together make up XX/Fig, the person. She is off balance.

@kuu I think you're right- on p114 she describes herself pretty clearly as being the personified urge for sex, as well as other base, animal feelings.
"Hunger, obsession, fear, survival, sex, death...Here, helpless, prone, you're powerless against it. Powerless against ME."

ah so this purpling Mirror self is estrus as a living personification? and a living libido?

and haha climax
12 . by: June 14, 2017, 1:45 am

ohhh... the fifth panel plays on my emotions so much. on the left, xx is so isolated in environment but her colours are intense. on the right, she is lacking colour of any sort while the world moves in a grey blur around her.

throughout this whole segment, xx has been stark in her appearance while herself in the mirror takes on a personality of its own. its sad to see xx not recognizing her worth throughout syconium, and now when it gets to this point to watch mirror-xx try to take it from her.

ironically it does function as a cautionary tale haha. i really cant wait to see what comes next.

It makes sense that an entity like Mirror Fig could only conceptualize things in terms of "more powerful = better". The most primitive form of dominance.

Just look where you ended up after obediently submitting to more powerful people, XX. Do you really want to keep going down that path?

I love the subtle gradients of color in Mirror Fig's eyes. All the colors are stunning really, amazing work depicting a pure white character in such varied and interesting ways.

She is a cornered animal, but she still has teeth.

She, sex/estrus, used to be the force that brought people together in the wild. She was powerful enough to make solitary species ignore their own nature and seek eachother out, because she was even more basic, more fundamental than the forces that drove them to seek a solitary life. And in social species the right to have sex, to possess the qualities that made one desirable, was to have status and privilege over ones peers.

But the Art and society inherently seeks to over throw that established dynamic. Solitary species are now social, they are brought together not by sex/estrus, but a desire to build something bigger than themselves. To contribute and collaborate and dream of their potential beyond the limits of what they are and realize the unknown of what they can become. They are bound to each other by the more permanent force of society, instead of by the temporary draw of sex/estrus.

It is not society that is scared of the unknown power of sex, but sex that fears the permanency of societal bonds. It has already lost it's true power.

I'm stuck on the fact that it looks like Fig, the estrus force, nature, CANNOT COMPREHEND the depth of XX's art, and, I think, the depth of society. She is assuming she is more powerful than a thing she cannot understand, as society is inherently beyond her! She doesn't understand abstraction. She has been the most powerful force- up until the point society emerged. Uh oh! Society may not have found a good way to deal with this primal force but it's trying and getting pretty close- a threat to her.

I'm getting excited for the approaching climax!!!

I like how when Smooth says "you can be stronger", her confidence coming back is matched by her panel space becoming larger, while Dark's panel is reduced to a box.

"You like him?"

No shit dipstick.

Also, on subsequent review, I have found this to be hilariously Star Wars like.

JOIN ME, AND TOGETHER WE WILL RULE THE GALAXY!

MAXIMUM OVERPURPLE.

XY's support has interfered with the complete takeover. Mirror Fig will now try to separate them.

Dark!Fig grayed out for a moment, interesting.

The just-bared teeth in the third panel, whoa. And this whole dark side spiel is great theater.

After this face-off, I'm thinking XX will start work on her true masterpiece, bringing the huge canvas out.

That sinister last panel is really concerning me. Come on...ever-renamed protagonist! You can do it!!

PurpleFig's hatred of society is kind of an interesting purposeful contradiction, given that we've learned how society CREATED "sexy" for predators the way she uses it, but also given that society has punished Fig so much for her sexuality.
